Football jerseys first began featuring numbers on the back in the late 19th century, when the first professional teams started playing. The numbers were used to identify players and were printed at the back of the jersey. In the 1930s, the American National Football League (NFL) began assigning permanent numbers to all its players, which allowed teams to easily identify which player was on the field. Since then, different football codes around the world have adopted the system of assigning numbers to players, with the numbers often reflecting the player's position on the field. Today, football jerseys are instantly recognizable and the numbers at the back have become an important part of the game.
